Hot Yoga
I did hot yoga with Andrea. The class was good, but I was disappointed that they raised their prices to $20 + tax for a class. That’s a bit much.

Got in an early morning run and tried a new beginning level yoga class. I was doing a bit of research for some of my clients. Not everyone is ready for 1.5 hours of hot yoga. The class was doable, but not easy. I’m really stiff in my hips and shoulders. http://www.yogacenters.com/ is located in Bellevue. I recommend their level one class for beginners.

I haven’t done hot yoga since December last year. I decided to give it a try because I just felt like detoxing and really sweating. In hot yoga you sweat buckets! I was careful not to push myself too hard. My other goal going in to class was to realign my body. I’ve felt a little out of whack since I started running again. The class felt great. I’m starting the week with good habits!

I went back to hot yoga today. I haven’t taken class in a long time. Today just seemed like a good day for it.

It’s been a couple of months since I’ve done yoga. I decided to go today and run tomorrow. Class was okay, but my focus is running now and I didn’t enjoy it that much. Maybe I’m burnt out on yoga for a while.
I am looking forward to running tomorrow, even though it’s supposed to be rainy and windy.

I went to the noon power yoga class today. I have only taken class from B.G. once and that was a couple of years ago. B.G. is at least 5′10″ or 5′ 11″. She normally has ripped abs. She is also a pilates instructor.
When I signed in for class, I saw B.G. One of my friends opened up a new studio called Pillates Millcreek. They are looking for instructors. B.G. promised to pass the word along to her colleagues.
I set up my yoga mat and got ready for class. B.G. walked in with this round belly poking out of her yoga pants. Her class was as tough as ever, lots of ab work. Her pilates/yoga style is a good combination. As she got into the side crow position, she explained that she wasn’t sure she could do it because she is 6 months pregnant! This detail didn’t seem to hinder her yoga. The kid is probably going to come out certified to teach Bikram!

Did the bikram class today. I am still sore from Mandy’s power yoga last Sunday. We did a lot of downward dogs and chattarangas. Today was good. I have a little swelling from my spill on the bike last week. I thought I might not be able to do the hero pose, but by the time we got there my ankle wasn’t complaining.
I noticed this week and last week that my heart rate dropped to 45 beats per minute in savasana. I’ll have to check my true resting heart rate. This is done first thing in the morning before you get out of bed. I’ve never seen my heart rate below 54, so that was kind of weird.

When I was doing yoga a though occurred to me. Heart zones are sports specific, and I have different zones for cycling vs running or swimming. I wonder what my zones for yoga would be.
My max HR for cycling is about 190 and running is closer to 200. I’ll bet hot yoga would be more like a 170 max. I’m going to try resetting my zones for yoga to see how many calories I burn. They claim that you can burn 400-600 calories in a class, but I am always burning way less than that, even though it’s intense.
I know that the EPOC (afterburn) keeps my metabolism elevated for quite some time after a class. It takes a while to return to homeostasis (normal resting level) after working in the heat.
Hmmmm….

There was a new instructor today for power yoga. She was tough. We held positions longer. She even extended the ab exercises to slow motion. We had to hold the bicycle maneuver position, switch sides, and hold. It was very effective. I am going to try this with my clients.

Although I got a late start, I’ve been a serious runner since 1994. I ran my first marathon in 1995 on my 30th Birthday. It’s been my goal to run the Boston Marathon since then. I missed qualifying by 12 minutes that year. I needed to run 3:40 and ran 3:52. Running in the most prestigious marathon, is the ultimate for most runners. The fact that you have to qualify, only fueled my competitive juices.
Over the next 9 years I ran 6 more marathons. I love running so much that I became a personal trainer and running coach in 2001. I continued to train and came within 4 minutes of my goal in 2003, when I ran 3:49. I was seriously hoping to qualify in 2004, but it didn’t happen. I had flare ups of plantar fasciitis off and on since I began running. In 2006 I ran 5 half marathons. Apparently this was too much for my body to handle. My plantar fasciitis became acute. I had to take time off to heal. (more...) | Bike: | 429 | miles |
