Work Out With My Daughter

Natasha went to her first dance tonight, the 8th grade dance.  She has been looking forward to this for a long time.  We bought her dress back in the fall.  We found the perfect dress and bought it a little big so it would fit her for the dance.  Buying early guaranteed us that no one else would show up wearing the same dress.  She has changed so much in the last 6 months, we have a hard time keeping her in clothes!  She is starting to wear my shoes and my clothes.

She is dedicated to her school work and her work outs.  We bought some new shoes for the dance and then went to the gym to do some cardio.  “I have to be home by 5pm, so I can shower and be ready by 6:30 pm mom.”  “Stay away from boys” was all her dad could say when he saw her.  She giggled when I dropped her off and went to hug her friends hello.  I had to take pictures at the house.  She didn’t want me to take them in front of her friends.  She’s growing up…..

Work Out With Tasha

My daughter,Tasha and I went to the gym. Whenever she wants to go, I’m always game. She likes the ARC Trainer. I have a hard time getting my HR up on that, so I did 10 minutes on the stairclimber, 10 minutes on the ARC Trainer and 10 minutes on the elliptical. We did some ab work together and went home. School will be out soon, so this is the first of many trips to the gym. We usually hit Starbucks on the way home. It’s nice spending time with her, not many 14 year olds want to hang out with their mom still.

Family Workout

Phil, Natasha and I went to the gym for a core workout.  Phil is doing his heavy lifting on his own.  Natasha needs to build strength to help her with volleyball.  All of us need core training.

Ab Crunches on Dynadisc

Side Crunches on Stability Ball

Wood Choppers with Medicine Ball

1 Arm/1 Leg Squat to Shoulder Press

Jump Drills for Volleyball

Leg Press

Hack Squats

Seated Abduction

Assisted Pullups

Seated Chest Press

Seated Military Press

Standing Rotation with Medicine Ball

We did a variety of exercises.  Natasha has been experiencing back pain during volleyball.  I think the fact that she is uber-flexible is part of the problem.  She needs some stability to balance out her flexibility.  She is so used to gymnastics and dance where flexibility helps.  She doesn’t engage her core when she jumps.  She arches he back and the result is pain.

Family Trip To The Gym

I woke Natasha and Phil up early so that we could go to the gym.  They always ask me to wake them up, but when I try to rouse them in the morning I get nothing but resistance.  Today was no different, they didn’t feel like going.  Phil walked the half marathon yesterday and stayed up late watching poker on TV.  It took a cup of coffee and a reminder that Natasha’s volleyball tryouts are coming up soon, to get them moving.

I was surprised to find there were quite a few cars in the parking lot for a Sunday morning.  I hopped on the treadmill, warmed up for .25 miles and started my run.  I felt like going longer, but didn’t have time.  I stretched my calves on the rotary calf machine.  My right ankle felt a little tender after yesterdays run.

I joined Phil and Natasha on the basketball court.  I was quickly recruited to shag balls.  This is a big responsibility for someone without much hand-eye coordination.  They have given up having me serve the ball.  That’s how bad I suck!

Natasha’s tryouts are in 2 weeks.  She is trying out for club volleyball, which is around and her middle school team.  Phil’s goal is to get her to the gym a few times a week until then.

Diva Dash Training Begins

My 13 year old daughter is training for a 5K .  A couple of years ago I trained her volleyball team for the Diva Dash, which is a race that was created for women, benefiting GOTR, Girls On The Run.

Now it turns out that she and her friend are going to do a 5K the same day that we are running our half marathon in Vegas.  We did our first run today at the gym.  She ran a mile and then walked a mile, while I got in a quick 3 miles.  All good runs finish with a trip to Starbucks.  That’s our reward!

Swim/Run/Walk

I brought my daughter with me to swim today. She is working on staying fit for volleyball. I am training for a triathlon in September. I am not going to be able to compete in anything earlier than September because I’m not running much yet. I put in an easy 800 meters. Tasha swam on her own.
Starbucks was the reward for getting up early on a Sunday morning to work out. She got her usual chai tea, non-fat with whip cream. I had a green tea misto with soy milk. Yum!
When we came home I did the run/walk around the yard. My PT prescribed 1 min run/4 min walk. I’ve done this a couple of times now. I ran around the outside of the house 3 times with the chuck it and threw the ball for our golden retriever, Bo. Then I walked 2 laps around the house and ran another 3 laps in the opposite direction. I am sure my neighbors think I’m nuts!

  • Total Time: 00:20:00.00
  • Distance: 880 yd
  • Average Pace: 2:17.28/100yd

Work Out With The Boys

When I say work out with the boys, I mean it literally. I took my 16 year old son and his two friends to the gym.

Chris’s friend, Jared and his friend’s mom, Katie recently joined the local gym last week. I agreed to show them some basic exercises to get them started. They are getting to the age where they want to build a little muscle. Chris gave up gymnastics about 3 years ago after competing for about 5 years. He dabbled in trampolening and aikido for a couple of years, but hasn’t been very consistent.

So, when he wanted to work out with his buddy Jared, we bought him a membership too. Anything to keep him from playing video games 24/7 right?

They have gone to work out a couple of times. Every time the kids want to go I take them, even if it’s only for a 30 minute work out. Today we brought another friend, Austin.

This is where I practice what I preach as a trainer and as a mom. I put them through their first work out and now I leave them alone. I still can’t believe that they would want to go to the gym with me. I am just trying be an example and keep the communication open between myself and my son. It’s a delicate balance sometimes.

More Work Outs With My Daughter

My daughter Natasha finished playing volleyball with her middle school team in February. Now she is gearing up to play with Alderwood Boys and Girls Club. We have taken the last month to work on general conditioning. She and I both need to work on core strength and balance. She is gaining strength, body awareness and learning how to transfer power.

Here is one of our lower body strength routines (3 Sets of 10 Reps):

Body Weight Squats
Alternating Forward Lunges (5lb dumbells)
Step Ups (12 inch step, 5lb dumbells)
Squat Jumps (5lb dumbells)

She is working with light weights and learning how to handle her own body weight. Each time we work out I really watch her form, to make sure she is using good alignment. Her movements are getting smoother as her body learns to recruit the appropriate musles to do the work. Her tendons are getting stronger and her bone density is improving. We do this routine only once a week, because it’s pretty intense.

We do some ab work afterwards and balance on the 1/2 foam rollers. We like to do yoga poses, like balancing stick and standing bow pose. Natasha’s background in dance and gymnastics really make a difference with the balance work. She has incredible flexibility and grace. I struggle to stay on the foam roller while she brings her leg up over her head and makes it look so easy.
