Considering A Duathlon…..

Last year I had a horrible experience at the Kirkland Triathlon. I’ve participated in this event since it’s inauguration. I’ve done the tri as a relay twice. I’ve done the sprint tri 3 times now. In 2007, I had my worst triathlon experience ever. The weather conditions weren’t bad. I was prepared and adequately trained. The problem was choppy water and my mental state. The wind kicked up and I just panicked. For the first time in my life, I seriously considered dropping out. I swam from lifeguard to lifeguard. Yes, the lifeguards were cute, but I’m too competitive to hang out with them during a race! I made it through the arduous swim and got my head back into the race. I managed to finish with an okay bike of 47:22, a decent 5K 25:23, but the swim took almost 28 minutes!

Now, I’m considering doing the duathlon. It’s not a matter of conquering the swim. I just really hate swimming unless it’s for recreation. If I do the du, then I will keep up my streak of participating in this fun event. The reason I like it is because it’s close, convenient and a lot of my friends do it. It’s also a way to keep me training. Should I do the du? What do you think?

Kirkland Triathlon Race Report

Today was my first “race” since December last year. I have been recovering from plantar fasciitis. I am happy to report that my plantar fasciitis is under control after taking the usual measures: PT, massage, ice, stretching, chiropractic, yoga and finally time off! It’s combination of PT, ice and time off that have really made the difference.

I have participated in the Kirkland Triathlon since it’s inauguration, 6 years ago. I’ve done it as part of a relay 3 times with clients. This was the 3rd time on my own. I love the course and it’s local. It’s a great measure of fitness. Read the rest of this entry »

Last Minute Sprint Triathlon Preparation

My preparation strategy is a little different from Zappoman’s.  I went to Rock Bottom and had a couple of glasses of wine with my personal training friends from BPC.  I think it’s important to relax before a race!  I also made spaghetti with meat sauce yum!

I’ve got a full day of putting people through various forms of torture with Kettle Bells and such.  Tomorrow I’ll attend a workshop on nutrition and hopefully go get pedicures at Frenchy’s with Donna and Kelli.  My birthday is coming up and they want to treat.  So, Phil don’t panic if you are reading this, that I am home spending recklessly while you travel the open country on your Harley.

I’ll increase my water intake, eat a few carbs and get to bed early on Saturday.  Hope for the best!

“A Little Less Conversation, A Little More Action”

I went for a run out the East Lake Sammammish Trail. You can access the trail by Whole Foods out in Redmond. The trail is really nice. I runs along the lake and goes all the way out to The State Park in Issaquah. The surface is gravel, which is easier on the body, less pounding.

I am tapering for my triathlon, but I find that I am getting very excited about going to Vegas! After Sunday, I’ll begin logging in more mileage. For now I will leave you with a little inspiration. “A little less conversation, a little more action”

Running Brick

I got off my bike and felt great. I started out and felt a little sore left heel for the first half mile. I made it to the track and logged in a mile around the track and ran home. My mile on the track was 8:13, and it felt good. I felt really warmed up and good on the way home. My feet didn’t hurt and I got into a good stride. I was pushing 173 HR, but it wasn’t a struggle.

I’m feeling better about the triathlon next weekend. I was hoping to get in one more swim/bike, but it hasn’t happened. If I can’t get it in this weekend or Tuesday, I’ll skip it.

Hilly Bike Brick

Yesterday I met Hutch out at logboom for a hilly ride. Our plan was to ride up Juanita hill and then get in some mileage on the Burke-Gilman Trail. Hutch was having some problems with his shoes. Apparently, a screw came loose and he wasn’t able to clip in on one side.

We cut our ride short and I decided to do a bike run brick. I got back on the trail and rode up through Brier, back home. The ride was easy and I didn’t push myself very hard because I knew I was going to run 3 miles when I got home.

Simonds Juanita Brier Course

What a funky day.  This morning it was really nice, now the clouds have rolled in and its raining.  I’m glad that I was able to get out and get a ride in before the rain started.

I rode from my house down to Kenmore, up Simonds Rd, up and over Juanita Dr and back up through Brier.  I wanted to get some hills in to prepare for the Kirkland Triathlon coming up in a couple of weeks.  The bike course is pretty hilly, but nothing compared to what I did today.  I’m feeling strong on the bike and running is coming along.  I would like to do a full brick, including 800 m swim, 12 mile bike and 5K run.  Hopefully, I will be able to squeeze it in.

Awesome Run!

Today my goal was to go easy and not let my HR get over 170.  I started easy, reaching my first mile at 9:30.  The second mile was about 9:15.  After that I felt warmed up.  I didn’t worry about pace, I just kept glancing at my HR monitor to see where I was.  I never saw anything over 167, but apparently my HR jumped to 170.  I am starting to feel like my old self again.  I love to start easy and pick up the pace naturally. :)
