I stopped at Sports Authority to buy some goggles for my swim. I took me about 10 minutes to pick out a pair of goggles. They had performance goggles, tinted goggles, adjustable goggles, etc. I couldn’t tell the difference between Speedo, Nike, and TYR. I finally went with the Technoflex Vision. They are supposedly leakproof and have 180 degree vision.
The new goggles didn’t leak, but the 180 degree vision was weird. They got me through 800 meters in the lake. The problem I have is that after I swim, I have rings around my eyes for hours afterwards. It looks like I’m hung over or something. My face feels tender around the brow bone. Maybe the goggles are too tight?

Wow, these are only $10 on-line. I just paid $15.99. Hmmm…

I made it a mile in the pool this morning. When I got there at 8 am all the lanes were full. I guess I should’ve gotten there earlier. I was about 3/4 of the way finished with my work out when an older guy wearing strong cologne jumped into the lane next to me. He started doing water aerobics with those foam weights and splashing around. The guy was nice enough, after I finished he asked me how far I swam. He said he hadn’t swum that far since college. I was polite even though I was feeling a tickle in my throat from his scent. I hate it when people wear cologne or perfume when they are working out. It’s almost like I could taste it in the water. Yuck!

Swam at Houghton Park. I couldn’t do the triathlon course, so I just swam around the dock and back. I had some leaky goggles, so I cut the swim short.

I am so used to waking up early during the week that it’s hard to sleep in on the weekend. I woke up a little after 5 am this morning and decided to sneak out for a swim.
There aren’t many people working out early on a Saturday morning, so I had the pool to myself. I got into a rhythm and my swim stroke felt good.
Here is my plan to get ready for Kirkland:
1) Swim 2 x per week ( at least once in open water, 1 brick per week)
2) Cycle 2 x per week (at least 1 brick per week)
3) Run 3 x per week (1 brick per week, ramp up to 5 miles on my run)
I am getting excited for my event and inspired by others on Sweat365. Michelle in going up against the mountain in Colorado today. She is doing the Pike’s Peak 1/2 marathon. Go Michelle! Mitch and Shelley have the Ironman Canada coming up next weekend. Good Luck Everyone!

Today I swam at Meydenbauer without my wetsuit. I adopted the training methodology of Dave Brinkman, who has completed 7 Ironman Triathlons. Dave is a great swimmer and cyclist. He has broken 12 hours in the Ironman.
Swimming with drag during training is kind of like running in sand. The drag makes it much harder. My .25 mile swim took me 3-4 minutes longer than an open water swim in my wetsuit. The water was cool and choppy. I abandoned my original goal of swimming .5 miles and drove to Kirkland to do the bike portion of the triathlon.
I agree with Dave’s training strategy, but I would also do some open water swimming with a wetsuit. The swim is the most difficult part of a triathlon for me. The wetsuit feels constrictive to me, so I need to practice wearing it.

Dave, Tina and I did a swim/bike brick starting at Meydenbauer today. This is my 3rd swim in the lake with my wetsuit. It’s getting easier. I noticed that my heart rate is higher in the lake than in the pool. Maybe I’m anxious? Or perhaps it’s the fact that my day started at 4:30 am today. Lack of sleep can elevate the heart rate.

Great swim at Meydenbauer today. Tina and I met for some triathlon training today. We had a mix up about cycling, I thought she wasn’t going to be able to ride, so I didn’t bring my bike. She brought hers. Oh well, I am glad that I got in some lake time.
I am surprised that more people haven’t discovered Meydenbauer. The park has a very nice roped off swimming area with an estimated 80 - 100 meters. You can circle swim and it’s not too choppy because it’s protected.
The one difficult part is the trek up to the parking lot is a long way from the water. You don’t have fast transition times here. It’s also pretty steep riding out of the park, which makes for a tough start on the bike.
Tina and I are both training for the Kirkland Triathlon. I have done this race every year since it’s inauguration. The first couple of years I did a relay with clients. I’ve done it on my own the last three years. I like trying to improve every year.
I am feeling pretty good about swimming now. Cycling is going well too. I should be running continuously by mid September for the race.

I don’t know what my HR Zones are for swimming. I guessed that they would be lower than cycling or running. I approached my swim today with curiosity. What kind of HR is normal for me in the pool?
I started out thinking that I’ll just relax and swim free style. I got into a rhythm and looked at my watch. 110-113 appeared on the screen. I pushed hard for 25 meters and noted a 119 HR. I continued to push hard for another 25 meters and saw 128.
I felt like I couldn’t sustain this level for long, so I relaxed back into my comfortable pace. I didn’t put myself through a “Heart Zones Test”, so I can’t say for sure, but I can’t imagine being able to get beyond 160 HR.
It may be that I am so inconsistent with swimming, that I would adapt and 128 would be a somewhat hard effort instead of a very hard effort. I’ll do some more experimenting and hopefully get a better idea of what I can do in the water. I have gone through training with Heart Zones to test and determine training zones. I just haven’t ever tested in the water.

I brought my daughter with me to swim today. She is working on staying fit for volleyball. I am training for a triathlon in September. I am not going to be able to compete in anything earlier than September because I’m not running much yet. I put in an easy 800 meters. Tasha swam on her own.
Starbucks was the reward for getting up early on a Sunday morning to work out. She got her usual chai tea, non-fat with whip cream. I had a green tea misto with soy milk. Yum!
When we came home I did the run/walk around the yard. My PT prescribed 1 min run/4 min walk. I’ve done this a couple of times now. I ran around the outside of the house 3 times with the chuck it and threw the ball for our golden retriever, Bo. Then I walked 2 laps around the house and ran another 3 laps in the opposite direction. I am sure my neighbors think I’m nuts!

Although I got a late start, I’ve been a serious runner since 1994. I ran my first marathon in 1995 on my 30th Birthday. It’s been my goal to run the Boston Marathon since then. I missed qualifying by 12 minutes that year. I needed to run 3:40 and ran 3:52. Running in the most prestigious marathon, is the ultimate for most runners. The fact that you have to qualify, only fueled my competitive juices.
Over the next 9 years I ran 6 more marathons. I love running so much that I became a personal trainer and running coach in 2001. I continued to train and came within 4 minutes of my goal in 2003, when I ran 3:49. I was seriously hoping to qualify in 2004, but it didn’t happen. I had flare ups of plantar fasciitis off and on since I began running. In 2006 I ran 5 half marathons. Apparently this was too much for my body to handle. My plantar fasciitis became acute. I had to take time off to heal. (more...) | Run : | 900 | miles |
