We stayed by the water at our friends place. We got up made coffee and walked downtown, shopped and enjoyed a cool, sunny day. We showered and went to the Goose Hollow Inn for reuben sandwhiches. Yum!
We came back, lazed around and watched basketball. Then we went to Phil’s brother’s 50th birthday party at Club Sport.

Steve, Cathy Beth and I had a good run. We lucked out and missed the rain. We had a bit of a tailwind on the way back, which was nice. We are on track for Boston.

Sore muscles today. I stopped and stretched at 10 minutes and then powered through at a slower than usual pace.

I haven’t been on this part of the trail in a long time. I was reminded of the last time I was training for Boston. I ran down from my house to the trail and put in a 20 miler. Today’s run was only 10, which was nice. I’ve been focusing on going easy, not worrying about pace. For the first time in my life, I’m actually running my long runs 1.5 minutes slower, like all the books recommend. It’s only because I’m beat trying to do so much. Training and real estate are taking their toll. I’m not complaining, it’s just a fact. I’ve been running for 16 years now and I know that I need to tweak things to run better. I need to stretch and strengthen more. I also need to eat more carbs before my long runs. My weight is down and I’m lean, but it’s not because I’m dieting. It’s from the training. I say that, but I am cutting sugar, which I’m hoping will help with recovery. I’m also cutting back on wine, one of my favorite things, but…..its a simple carb….too much sugar.

Although I got a late start, I’ve been a serious runner since 1994. I ran my first marathon in 1995 on my 30th Birthday. It’s been my goal to run the Boston Marathon since then. I missed qualifying by 12 minutes that year. I needed to run 3:40 and ran 3:52. Running in the most prestigious marathon, is the ultimate for most runners. The fact that you have to qualify, only fueled my competitive juices.
Over the next 9 years I ran 6 more marathons. I love running so much that I became a personal trainer and running coach in 2001. I continued to train and came within 4 minutes of my goal in 2003, when I ran 3:49. I was seriously hoping to qualify in 2004, but it didn’t happen. I had flare ups of plantar fasciitis off and on since I began running. In 2006 I ran 5 half marathons. Apparently this was too much for my body to handle. My plantar fasciitis became acute. I had to take time off to heal. (more...) | Run : | 900 | miles |
