3.5 Outside & In The Drink + 6.5 On The Treadmill

I attempted to run 10 miles outside today in the snow here in Sunriver. The snow was falling softly, as the clouds portentously covered the sky. The forecast was 4-6 inches of snow. I couldn’t whimp out after all the gibing I had gotten from Michelle and Andrea.

I started out runnning around the golf course path. I had my ipod and was peacefully warming up and getting into my run when I had my first fall. I slipped on some ice and landed directly on my posterior. It didn’t really hurt. I got up and continued my run, contemplating 2 laps around the golf course. 30 minutes into my run I slipped and and fell into a pond or puddle which was at least 6 inches deep. I was soaked and with the temperature holding at about 29 degrees, I decided it probably wasn’t a good idea to run another hour outside.

I went back to my room, put on some shorts and headed for the fitness center. My shoes were wet but I didn’t really worry about it. I started noticing chaffing around mile 4. I looked down to find that my new Asics were red from rubbing between my big toe and the arch of my foot. Luckily, I was able to get a bandaid and finish out the run. When I got back to the room I accessed the damage. I have bruises on my left thigh from the dip in the water and blisters on both feet.

Lisa,

I can relate to your situation. While I was training for the Rome Marathon that I recently completed, there were a lot of days that I begged of my morning run because of the snow. This became especially true after straining the muscles on the back side of my knees from the hyperexention of running on snow/ice covered surfaces.

It’s fun to get out there. You just have to be careful huh?

good for you for trying, and for getting on the treadmill as i would have likely gone back to my room for some t.v.!
i have friends who use those nifty sneaker “chains” for running in slippery conditions supposedly they work well but it’s not as if we need them in seattle very often.
