19 Miles - Last Long Run Before Boston!

I really lucked out with the weather today. My schedule was really light, so I took the day off to do this final long run. The blister on my left foot was really bothering me as I ran down the hill toward the Burke-Gilman trail. I stopped at the Jack n’ The Box, where the employees took pity on me and gave me a new bandaid with neosporin. I patched up the blister, hit the trail towards Lake Forest Park. I ran out towards Mathew’s Beach and back. There are dots on the pavement every quarter mile and there are also mile markers out there. I played a little game of trying to stick with 9 min pace, which felt pretty good today. Maybe I adapted to the elevation at Sunriver so this run was easy until I headed back up the hills of Brier. Glad to be done! I am ready to start my taper for Boston. :)

Back In Seattle

I’m back in the city, nursing my wounds. I have some blisters and bruises from my shoes and my fall on Saturday. Tomorrow I will officially be 3 weeks from Boston. I intend to go out and do my last long run of 18 miles. I hope the weather cooperates.

I got in some good training at elevation, which makes me happy. I survived gas station coffee and beef jerky dinners with Michelle. At least I didn’t blow my diet down in Sunriver! I’ll carb up tonight to get ready for tomorrow’s run.

Gait Analysis In The Snow-What Does It Mean?

Michelle and I got up after a nice 10 hour sleep to go for a run.  We both ran 10 yesterday, so today’s run was an easy pace.  It was only 5 degrees according to the news.  We put on our layers and headed out to the running path.

We ran out and back and followed our tracks back to the room.  Last year I spent almost a full year suffering from plantar fasciitis on my left foot.  I went through massage, yoga, new orthodics, cortisone shot, physical therapy and time off.  The phsical therapy and time off gave me some relief.  Through PT, I had gait analysis.  We took video of me running on the treadmill and made some interesting discoveries.  1. I’m working harder on the right side  2.  I’m not getting as much lift on the left side with the hamstring (rear view)  3.  The left foot toes in at the last moment (front view).  What my PT and I think is happening is that my left glutes are weaker.  The other thing is that I pronote more on the right, so the left side is trying to match the pronation by moving the hip and ankle to get an even strike.

What I noticed today is the I am dragging my right foot.  I don’t quite understand why.  It feel like I’m so much stronger on the right and yet I am dragging this foot .  I feel like I am not dorsi-flexing equally on the left.  The left side feels so much looser.  I truly believe that I’m a little twisted in my pelvis because I keep having these alignment issues.  My massage therapist says that my body feels different.  It’s hard acheiving balance.  I think this is why the longer distances are hard on my body.

Has anyone else experienced anything similar?  Can you shed some light on this subject?

Does anyone else have this problem?  I know we are not all symetrical.  Maybe the problems appear when you push your body to it’s limits.  I guess marathon is the limit for me.  No ultras are in my future!

3.5 Outside & In The Drink + 6.5 On The Treadmill

I attempted to run 10 miles outside today in the snow here in Sunriver. The snow was falling softly, as the clouds portentously covered the sky. The forecast was 4-6 inches of snow. I couldn’t whimp out after all the gibing I had gotten from Michelle and Andrea.

I started out runnning around the golf course path. I had my ipod and was peacefully warming up and getting into my run when I had my first fall. I slipped on some ice and landed directly on my posterior. It didn’t really hurt. I got up and continued my run, contemplating 2 laps around the golf course. 30 minutes into my run I slipped and and fell into a pond or puddle which was at least 6 inches deep. I was soaked and with the temperature holding at about 29 degrees, I decided it probably wasn’t a good idea to run another hour outside.

I went back to my room, put on some shorts and headed for the fitness center. My shoes were wet but I didn’t really worry about it. I started noticing chaffing around mile 4. I looked down to find that my new Asics were red from rubbing between my big toe and the arch of my foot. Luckily, I was able to get a bandaid and finish out the run. When I got back to the room I accessed the damage. I have bruises on my left thigh from the dip in the water and blisters on both feet.

I’m In The Mountains!

We arrived in Sun River, Oregon last night after a somewhat grueling trip from Seattle. The last time I was here was in 2003, when I did the endurance duathlon. That day it was 95 degrees and probabaly 100 humidity, at least it felt like that when I was running the half marathon. People were dropping like flies. There were only 6 women signed up for the duathlon and only 3 finished. Guess what? I came in 3rd, but it wasn’t quite as meaningful because I was also last! I was happy to finish though. I ran walked through the half marathon with my friend, Bucky who talked me into the event in the first place. Of course, I was questioning what the hell I was doing the entire time. The problem was that I opened my big mouth and told a bunch of people that I was doing the dualthlon. So, I had no choice but to finish.
The weather conditions are a little different today with snow in the forecast and a high of about 34 degrees. I have to admit that I considered jumping on the treadmill. They have a really nice fitness center here at the resort. However, I think Michelle would give me S#*! for the rest of my life if I did that. So, I am going to suck it up, wear everything that I own and brave the elements. That which doesn’t kill us makes us stronger, right?

Tough Recovery

I finally was able to run today. I guess I put it all out there for the 20 miles on Saturday because I haven’t felt like doing anything other than eating and sleeping for about 2 days now. My left hip flexor is a bit angry. The old Lisa would’ve ran no matter what. The new Lisa, the one who is listening to her body, took the 2 days off and rested. I am so close to Boston now. I really have to pay attention to how I am feeling so that I can have a good race. I have a tendency to overtrain. Not this time. After Saturday, I feel like I’m ready. I don’t question whether or not I can do it. I just need to hold on to my fitness and get in one more long run.

Resolution Run Series - 20 Mile Race Report

konamoxt-3com.jpeg

We did it! We completed the series today. All of us did well on a tough course, but what a beautiful day. 60 degrees, it doesn’t get much better than that.

For some strange reason I was much calmer about this race. I was worried about the 15 miler, and when that one went well, I felt a sense of relief. My training is on track. I wasn’t “racing” hard today, but I wanted to run between 8:30-9:00 min pace. I was able to do that today. I tried taking accel gel at 45 minutes, but only took half of it. I took the other half at 1 hour. I continued to spread out my gels, just kind of sucking on them every couple of miles after the first one. I went through 3 gels during the race. This seemed to work well. I had a constant source of energy and I never felt depleted. I had my ipod shuffle stocked with some great songs. I hit mile 16-17 and Van Halen’s Running with the Devil came on, perfect timing to get me up through the last 3 miles of rolling hills.

The resolution series is a great event. The timing is almost perfect for getting ready for Boston. I’ve got one more long run and then the taper begins. I am Boston Bound Baby!
