Keep The Other Person Talking…

Michelle and I had our usual catch up conversation on the run this morning. “That was tough,” I said. “Why do you think I kept you talking,” She countered. I can count on Michelle for two things, one is that she’s always game. I can text her at 9 pm at night and ask if she wants to run at 7am the next morning. The answer is almost always yes. The other thing is that she will always push me. I guess we push each other because neither of us is willing to back down. One of our rules is we have to “negative split”. That means we have to run faster on the way back, than we did on the way out.

Group Run On 520 Trail

A lot of people were going out of town this weekend, so some of us decided to get our long run in early this morning. I got up at 4:15, hit the 24 hour Starbucks and trained my first client at 5 am. I met Cate, Tina and Steve at the Studio at 6 am and we ran along the 520 trail. It was dark and cold. I told everyone to wear gloves and then I didn’t. I wish I had. I don’t know the elevation, but there are some serious hills. The trail runs along the freeway from Bellevue to Redmond. The good thing about the trail is that it’s fairly well-lit from the freeway. You may run into an occasional cyclist, but it’s not very crowded. I’m glad that we were able to run together. It’s nice to have support on the long runs.

What’s Wrong With My Glutes?

I went to physical therapy yesterday.  My running has been going well.  I’ve been consistently working on my core. I’ve been a good girl, taking time off when I needed to. I’ve eased back into my training and it’s all good. Right?

Well, it turns out that I have a problem with turning in. My running gait analysis video revealed that my left foot toes in the last second before push off. The right side is solid with a nice normal strike that goes from supination to pronation. The left side does the weird toe in thing. It’s almost as if a string were attached to my left foot that jerks  my toes towards the midline. Funky!

There is a strength imbalance between my external hip rotators (glute minimus) on the left and the right side. The interesting thing is that I’ve seen race photos of myself from the 80’s with this toe in gait. I can do some strengthening exercises to help balance out the descrepancy.  However, this could be my own unique asymetry.  I’ll try working on external rotation to see if this helps.

I got in a quick 5k in the neighborhood.  The day was just too nice to waste.  We have to take advantage of sunny days here in Seattle.  The good new is my feet feel great.  No more plantar fasciitis!

Best Time Of Year To Run

There is nothing more beautiful than a clear fall day in Seattle, emphasis on the clear.  The sun shines on the colorful leaves that are still on the trees and the crisp crunchy ones that have fallen to the ground.   This is perfect running weather.

I went out for an hour yesterday, bumping up my medium long run from 6 to 7 miles.  I ran a familiar course I call the video store loop.  It’s a hilly loop that seems to be mostly uphill.  Although I know that there is some downhill as well.  I wasn’t really aware of the downhill yesterday.

My record for this course is 51 minutes.  The last time I hit that time was in 1998, when I ran my best half marathon time ever.  I was hoping to run 60 minutes yesterday.  I surprised myself by running faster.

I’d like to run 56 minutes on this course before I go to Vegas.  I don’t have a time goal for the Las Vegas Half Marathon, but 56 minutes would be a good indicator of fitness, something to shoot for.

Why I Run

Running has been part of my life since high school. I have always enjoyed solitude and time to mull things over. Running has gotten me through both good times and bad times. I love the sense of freedom it gives me. I often celebrate birthdays by going out for a long run. I celebrated my 30th birthday by running my first marathon in Portland in 1995.

Running is the test that I pass. When the race is tough and I push through the wall, I feel strong. It gives me confidence to try other things. I’ve been humbled by running. In life there are no guarantees, I can’t always count on my body to perform. I’ve had to learn to go with the flow. Rest and recovery are equally as important as training. It’s not possible to run a personal best each time I race. I’ve ran races where I trained properly and felt prepared. Yet on race day something has gone wrong. It could be the weather, hydration, elevation, or just not my day. So much of running is mental. I’ve had days where I expect to perform at a certain level, and when I find that I am not, I’m disappointed. Every time I’m out there I question why am I doing this? But when I finish, I find myself planning the next race.

Running is my connection to other people. As a coach and a personal trainier I get the opportunity to help someone else reach their goal. I know the dedication it takes to run. I know what it’s like to have that sense of accomplishment. I know what it’s like to test yourself mentally and physically. Sharing that with others is amazing and a lot of fun.

Sometimes I don’t know why I run. Is it a compulsion? A habit? An addiction? Maybe, all of the above. All I know is that it’s the one thing I do for myself and that’s a good thing.

Leschi Group Run

We lucked out with the weather today.  The forecast was raining, thunder storms etc.  I met Steve and Cate down at Starbuck’s in Leschi.  We ran out to Seward Park along the lake.  It was a nice run with a bit of a wind, but not too bad.  We had a little tail wind on the way back.
