Two Workouts And A Pedicure

Did some spinning in the rec room with my trusty spinning bike. Rode for an hour.

I met Donna and Michelle for lunch at the Cactus in Madison Park. I got there early and secured a great table outdoors. It was a perfect day. We have been trying to get together for about 6 weeks now. Finally, we were able to schedule our pedicures at Frenchy’s, If you ever want a casual, comfortable atmosphere to hang out with your girlfriends, Frenchy’s is the place. This is the second time I’ve gone and I think I need to go back at least once a quarter.

I soaked in hot water, had my feet scrubbed and exfolliated, then dipped in parafin wax. The hot wax feels really good! One of the best things about getting a pedicure is the calf massage. Make a note runners. Guys are doing it too. They usually skip the polish, although I did see a guy with a french pedicure in yoga class last week. He was the exception!

I got home and had to do a bunch of errands, which took all day. I dropped my daughter and 2 of her friends off at the movies. I had some time, so I decided to go for work out number two.

I did the EFX and Treadclimber for an hour and then lifted weights. I did my PT exercises. Hopefully, I made up for the lunch I had at Cactus and the junk I have been eating lately. For some reason, I haven’t been able to resist the kids pizza lately. It’s time to get back on track.

Got A New Camera

I bought a new camera from Comp USA in January. I didn’t discover that I had bought the wrong film for the camera until February. The store was sold in February and no longer was able to take returns even with the receipt. I was not too happy about this, because now I am stuck with two scan cards that don’t work for my camera.

I purchase the correct memory sticks for the camera prior to our trip, which was back in April. Are you seeing a pattern of procrastination here? Now, it’s June and I have finally gotten the camera software loaded onto the computer, with the help of my genius 16 year old son, Chris. All my vacation pictures are on the computer now. Cool huh?

Not so cool…The pictures are in a DS000123.JPG file. The pictures from my old camera look like this IMG_2829.JPG. So, when I try to open it as a JPG, it does this:

/Users/lisasabin/Desktop/DSC00123.JPG

It’s frustrating! Why would I have to reformat the file? This should be easy. I shouldn’t have to be a computer programer to get photos on my blog! I’m going to have to contact www.sony.com/support. I went to the web-site and watched a few tutorials. I’m still clueless.

My Toes Are Uncoordinated!

My physical therapist discovered that my toes are weak!  I have not been cleared to run yet.  One of the problems I have is weak, uncoordinated toes.

My PT tested my feet by inversion, eversion, point, and flex.  Guess what?  I can’t point my toes for any length of time without experiencing severe toe cramps.  I jumped off the PT table when Chris made me flex all my toes, except my big toe.  I couldn’t do it!

Here is the exercise he gave me:

Flex all the toes except the big toe, make sure that the toes aren’t curling, but remain straight.  (apparently the distal digit is strong, it’s the proximal one that is weak)

My PT claims that if I do these exercises my plantar fasciitis will go away!

Swim/Bike At Meydenbauer

Dave Brinkman and I made plans to do a training brick today.  Our plan was to go to Meydenbauer, get in an open water swim and then head out for a ride around Mercer Island.

Last night was book club.  I knew I would be out late and probably indulge in a little wine with the girls.  I got my bike pumped up and packed the car last night before I went to bookclub.  That way I would have less to do in the morning before my first client meeting at 6 am.

The alarm went off at 4:30 am.  I automatically hit snooze and continued to doze.  Then, I remembered that I still needed to print out some work outs for my clients.  I finally was able to drag myself out of bed at 4:45 am.  I probably shouldn’t have had that last bit of wine last night.  But Patrick brought out this reserve zinfandel from St Francis and it was good!

I NEED COFFEE!  Today is a day where I chose to indulge in some organic java, before heading out the door.  I bought these “To Go” cups from a restaurant supply store.  They come in handy when I have to leave the house in a hurry.

My first client didn’t make it in for some reason.  So, I took the time to do some of my PT exercises.  I met with 4 clients today and then met Dave for our work out.

This is the first time I have worn my wetsuit this year, my first open water swim.  I eased into the water and fought the familiar feelings of suffocation that I always feel when I wear my wetsuit.  I wish it weren’t so tight around the neck.  I have tried to stretch it out with a hanger, but it always seems to return to it’s original shape, like that Stretch Armstrong Doll.  I managed to swim 400 meters in 10 minutes.  Dave got in 500 meters.  We got on our bikes and proceeded up the steep hill out of the park.  My heart rate spiked to 159, just getting out of the park!

Dave wasn’t able to ride the whole way, so he turned around after 20 minutes.  It was a beautiful day to ride.  Mercer Island really is a nice place to ride.  The course is rolling and sometimes shady.  The residents are used to cyclists and for the most part patient.

We plan to get together and do more training as our schedules allow.  It’s nice to get in some good training early in the day.  Hopefully, we’ll be able to do this every other week.

Dean Karnazes 24 Hour Treadmill Challenge

Dean Karnazes will attempt to break the world record by running on a treadmill in Times Square for 24 hours.  He’ll need to run more than 153.76 miles to beat it.

He will start his run at midnight on Thursday night.  Supposedly, he will be suspended between two billboards.  The event will be televised on one of the billboards. The goal is to raise $1 million for Athletes for a Cure Foundation.  The money will go for cancer research.

I am amazed at what this guy can do.  He’s super-human.  I don’t know how he is able to continue running and stay injury free.  I can’t imagine running on a treadmill for 24 hours.  I once ran 13 miles on the treadmill when I was training for a marathon.  I did it because I needed the mileage and the weather conditions outside were icy.

What does he eat during these events?

He burns so many calories it’s hard to get enough fuel.  He eats whatever he can get his hands on.  He has even ordered pizza on the run!

The rest of the time his diet is clean, filled with grilled salmon, flaxseed, Bear Naked Granola and yogurt.  The omega 3’s in the flaxseed and salmon are anti-inflammatory and help with muscle stiffness.  The yogurt and granola are low glycemic index foods, which provide long lasting energy.

How does he stay injury free?

Most people become injured by doing too much too soon.  The 10% rule advises that mileage shouldn’t increase by more than 10% each week.  Poor running mechanics can also lead to injury.  Recovery is an important part of training.  Listening to your body is crucial.

Karnazes prefers mountain biking and hill running to traditional strength training.  Hitting the gym is his last resort.  Most ordinary mortals wouldn’t hold up to his kind of training.  It takes dedication, determination, and committment.

The rewards are a huge sense of accomplishment and an amazing feeling of euphoria.  The euphoric feeling after an ultra marathon can last for weeks.

I would love to be able to consume pizza without guilt.  I’m all for the runner’s high, but I think I’ll leave the ultras to people like Dean Karnazes!

Got My Butt Kicked At The Pool!

It would really help if I made swimming part of my routine.  I only hit the pool when it starts getting close to triathlon season.  Maybe this is why I only do the sprint distance, because I never really build endurance in the water.

Today I went to the pool with the intension of swimming 1/2 mile.  I slide into the cool water, put on my goggles and begin my first lap.  Unfortunately, I brought some leaky goggles.  I kept having to adjust them and I still had a bit of water coming in.

I’m almost half way through my work out when this young woman in a orange speedo asks to share a lane with me.  “Do you want to circle swim or split the lane”?  She asks.  “Uhh,  let’s split it,” I answer.  It’s a good thing too because she was executing flip turns with ease and beating my by half a pool length.

Oh well, my goal is for swimming to become natural.  I don’t want to push the pace.  It feels better every time I get in the pool.  I should start swimming in the lake next week to get used to my wetsuit again.  Last year I discovered that Meydenbauer Park, in Bellevue has a really nice swimming area blocked off.

Coffee - Mixed Review

coffee beans I have to admit that I love my morning coffee. I’ll drink coffee in just about any form, latte’s, mocha’s, cappuccino’s, you name it, all nonfat of course!

Occasionally, I clean up my diet and eliminate coffee, sugar, white stuff and wine. I usually drop a few pounds when I do this. I drink more water, when I eliminate the coffee, plus I am saving a few calories from latte’s, which creates a calorie deficit.

As a runner, I am interested in improving my performance. I want to run faster. I also want to maintain a healthy body weight, that will make it easier to run.

Is Coffee Good or Bad?

Pros:

Antioxidents - The key is moderation. Some studies have found that small amounts of caffeine may help prevent cancer because of the antioxidants it contains. On the other hand, large amounts can cause heart palpitations and other circulatory problems.

Athletic Performance - Primary among caffeine’s benefits is its effect on free fatty acid metabolism. When frees fatty acids are used for fuel they spare glycogen, glucose and amino acids which would otherwise be metabolized at a faster rate. The net effect of this is increased availability of glucose for use as muscle fuel. In other words, higher blood sugar levels for longer periods of time. This is also why coffee is popular among students. The brain functions exclusively on glucose, and higher blood sugar levels facilitate thinking. The most popular effect of caffeine is not physical, but mental.

This stimulation, in the form of motivation, can be an advantage to an occasionally undermotivated athlete but be careful not to become too hyper before a race or ride. Excess stimulation can impair the ability to ride safely and intelligently.

The amount and type of caffeine consumed are significant determinants of its effectiveness. There are large qualitative differences between coffees, even though the total amount of caffeine might be similar. Better coffees are lower in acid, higher in caffeine and have a longer lasting effect. Ground coffees are generally preferable to canned or instant. Sodas are all basically similar except for taste, Coke and Mt. Dew (and Snapple) being the most popular among cyclists. Diet sodas are a good choice because of their fluid to caffeine ratio, taste, and lack of sugar. Tea is a popular choice among Europeans. Some pros drink a bottle full of Earl Grey and but, don’t drink anything but water off the bike.

Increases metabolism temporarily - Caffeine can HELP you drop small amounts of extra weight with the proper diet and exercise and in proper doses. but always be sure to drink alot of water, because most of the weight at first will be WATER WEIGHT and if you over-do the caffeine you can easily dehydrate yourself. Also remember, while caffeine speeds up you metabolism temporarily, it also can speed up your appetite. but as a whole it can be very helpful to boost energy while dieting and help you lose a few pounds or at least help you get started.

Cons:

Addicted
- Caffiene causes a short-term elevation in your metabolism, which gives you a burst of energy. Like any addiction, however, as your body becomes accustomed to caffiene, it begins to compensate. Used over the long term, caffiene actually reduces your metabolism. . . you come to need increasing amounts of caffiene just to stay alert. The slower metabolism actually causes you to gain weight on less food. This makes Diet Coke the perfect product, since it is actually helping to create the problem it’s trying to “cure.”

Increases cortisol levels - It raises Cortisol levels in the body. Cortisol is a hormone that is responsible for fat storage in the body.

Spike in blood sugar - After caffeine begins to wear off your blood sugar plummets. This causes you to crave sugar. In other words you think your hungry when you’re really not. This is obviously counterproductive to your weight loss goal.

Fatigue - After caffeine wears off youare tired. Then you have more caffeine. Then you are tired. Ect… By the end of the day most people who drink coffee are exhausted and they dont know why. This fatigue makes it difficult to exercise which is a one of the most important ways we should be getting our energy.

Pesticides used on coffee crops - Coffee is a heavily sprayed crop, so drinking organic coffee might reduce or eliminate the exposure to toxic herbicides, pesticides, and fertilizers.

Like anything else, moderation seems to be the key. I’ve been drinking more green tea lately. I also bought some new organic coffee from Milestone that I like. I continue to drink coffee and not drink coffee in spursts. There are times when I need the boost, especially when I am riding a century, or running a marathon. I don’t like to be addicted and sometimes I fall into that category. That’s when I take a break from it.
