Hilly Ride
I set out to do a hilly ride almost 3 weeks ago. My goal was to get in a hilly ride before I did the 7 Hills course with my group on May 12th. I abandoned my orginal course on May 8th, knowing that if I rode the whole course, I wouldn’t feel recovered enough to ride the 7 Hills course on May 12th.
Today I got up and rode the 23 mile course that I had originally intended. My brother in law is visiting from Portland, and wanted to get in a couple of hilly rides over the weekend. So, the two of us got out there at 7 am this morning, to beat the crowds.
We rode from our house through Brier, down to Kenmore, up Simonds Rd, down to Juanita Beach, up Juanita hill, up Holmes Point Dr, down Juanita, and back up through Brier. The ascent was 1680, and it took us 1:45 to do the ride. My average mph was 13, Dave’s was 13.3. My average heart rate was 133, with 167 max. Our average cadence was the same, 68 average, and 120 high.
I feel like I am starting to make some progress in my cycling. It will be interesting to see how working on cadence helps my speed. I wonder if I’ll see the benefit with triathlon or not.

I missed qualifying by 12 minutes that year. I needed to run 3:40 and ran 3:52. Running in the most prestigious marathon, is the ultimate for most runners. The fact that you have to qualify, only fueled my competitive juices.
Over the next 9 years I ran 6 more marathons. I love running so much that I became a
