Staying On Track
I’m one of those people who likes to say yes to anything I think will be fun. If there is a party, I’m there. I love going out to dinner, going to plays, running races, and taking classes. I’m up for just about anything. Sometimes I feel like I’m going full blast.
I am involved in a new business venture with my husband Phil. I am helping coach volleyball. We recently signed up for a parenting class. I am in a bookclub. I’m doing this in addition to personal training part time and driving the kids around etc. I’m pretty busy!
I notice that I get cranky when I’m stressed. I can relate to what Phil is saying about feeling a little overwhelmed. I hate not getting everything done. I hate it when things start to fall apart and the house is a mess. Sometimes, I have to let things go. I can’t keep all the balls in the air at once. Laundry is usually low on the list, so it’s the first thing to go. My family is often complaining about the lack of socks and underwear!
Exercise is a non-negotiable thing for me. It’s one thing that gives structure to my day. If I didn’t work out, I would go crazy. When feelings of overwhelm hit me, I get in the cleaning mode. My family compares me to “Monica” on the TV show friends. She’s extreme and I can be that way too, at times. The other thing I do to help get control is make a list. When I have a list of things to do, I can see clearly what is important. Then I can prioritize, and be productive. Once I do that, I breathe a little easier. Maybe I am a little like Monica, but it’s what works for me.
Although I got a late start, I’ve been a serious runner since 1994. I ran my first marathon in 1995 on my 30th Birthday. It’s been my goal to run the Boston Marathon since then. I missed qualifying by 12 minutes that year. I needed to run 3:40 and ran 3:52. Running in the most prestigious marathon, is the ultimate for most runners. The fact that you have to qualify, only fueled my competitive juices.
Over the next 9 years I ran 6 more marathons. I love running so much that I became a
